PEACE IN SIGHT APPEAL

Expanding treatment of hereditary eye disease among Palestinians.

FACT

45% of marriages in Palestine are between cousins or other consanguineous partners.

RESULT

A seriously increased risk of developing autosomal recessive eye conditions, including IRDs.

In 2016, St John Eye Hospital in East Jerusalem with Hadassah Hospital, established an ocular genetic research unit to serve the Palestinian community. The ‘EU Peacebuilding Initiative’ made a one-off €500,000 grant.

Project Rozana is committed to this vitally important health project that is making a meaningful difference to the eye health of thousands of Palestinians through the genetic research and training.

  • A key blood sampling program from 50 Palestinian families with a history of retinal dystrophy, to determine the causative gene.
  • A Hereditary Degeneration Centre has opened at St John Eye Hospital.
  • an important space for Palestinian patients to get diagnosis, treatment, advice.

“The Genetic Lab is a turning point as it will address the needs of the large number of Palestinian patients who have nowhere else to turn for diagnosis, advice and treatment.”

ST JOHN EYE HOSPITAL JERUSALEM

St John Eye Hospital was established in 1885 and is the pre-eminent standalone ophthalmological centre in the Middle East. It is the principal provider of eye care for Palestinians in East Jerusalem.

The majority of complex cases from the West Bank and Gaza are referred here. Serious eye disease is high among the Palestinian population; much of this is the result of consanguineous (first cousin) marriages.

As the only charitable provider, the importance of the hospital for the region cannot be overstated.
